Beat the Beast – Staying prepared during snowy conditions

As the beast from the East continues its assault on most of the UK, now seems like a great idea to provide ostomates with advice on preparing for snowy conditions. Adverse weather conditions can affect everything so it’s important to stay prepared to avoid finding yourself in need and, of course, to ensure you stay safe at all times.

Supplies

When weather warnings come in, it’s always a good idea to assess your stock of supplies and ensure you have more than enough to get you through a long enough period of time should deliveries be compromised. It’s always better to have too many than not enough. It’s a realistic possibility that you might find yourself stuck indoors for a few days with limited access to resupply.

If you find yourself low on supplies and deliveries have been cancelled due to poor weather then the best course of action is to contact your GP or stoma nurse who might be able to arrange emergency supplies.

Journeys

If you plan on taking any long journeys then it’s worth packing more than you require. Hopefully, you won’t find yourself stuck anywhere, but it’s best to be prepared. If you’re visiting family and become snowed in or caught in traffic etc you will be thankful for the additional supplies.

If the weather becomes really bad, it’s worth re-considering or rescheduling any long journeys if possible. If it can’t be avoided then make sure you take every precaution and stay safe.

Take care

Just a general note to take care in the snowy weather and avoid taking any unnecessary risks. Driving and even walking can be perilous in this weather and we want everyone to stay safe and secure, the weather will hopefully pass soon and normality can resume.
