Let’s educate about invisible illnesses

The first week of December will mark an awareness week that we at Oakmed are particularly keen to highlight. Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness week runs from the 1st – 7th December, a particularly important cause due to the invisible nature of each disease.

There’s a stigma in society attached to those who suffer from invisible illnesses, such as being judged for using disabled facilities. Although we’ve come a long way to reducing this stigma, it’s important that we keep the conversation going to make the invisible, visible in society. Just because something isn’t seen, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be heard either!

Here are a few ways you can help during the week:

Spread the message via social media

Share posts and updates from the official social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. You can also create your own messages to spread awareness through your friends online.

Make a donation

Make a small donation to help further the cause. You can simply text PURPLE to 70700 to give £5. Alternatively, you can donate online.

Fundraise

You could set up your own fundraiser in aid of Crohn’s and Colitis. Facebook is a quick and easy way to start raising funds, you can set up your own fundraiser in just a few clicks of a mouse!

Get involved in local events

Look around for local events you could attend and help out at. There are already events taking place across the country, plus it’s a great opportunity to meet other ostomates!

Wear your best purple with pride

If nothing else, why not simply dig out your best purple clothing and wear it on the day to help spread awareness. 7th December will be #PurpleFriday, so make sure you use the hashtag to show how you’re wearing your purple with pride. Why not try to get your friends and colleagues involved too?
