Register hereChristmas is one of those times of the year where routine goes out of the window and we tend to make changes to our habits, especially with regards to diet. There’s no reason that your stoma should stop you from being able to enjoy Christmas to its fullest, but you may have to make some minor adjustments and plan ahead just to be on the safe side.
Here are our top 5 tips for this Christmas:
Over the holiday period, your GP surgery and supply deliveries will likely operate during reduced hours and be closed at times. Not only that, but if you rely on deliveries they could be slower due to the weather and busy time. It’s best to make sure you have more than enough to get you through to the new year! Better safe than sorry, after all!
We all know that Christmas can be a time of indulgence, and most of us tend to eat more, enjoy a richer diet and an irregular meal pattern. Of course, by simple logic when our food intake increases so does our waste, which means you may have to change your bag more frequently.
If you experience any discomforts during the Christmas period a hot bath, some gentle massaging and plenty of water can help to ease the pains.
It’s natural for many to want to enjoy an alcoholic drink over the festive period. If you do, then the best advice is to make sure you also drink plenty of water to ensure you stay hydrated and exercise moderation. Alcohol is a diuretic which makes you pass more urine so you may also need to change your bag more frequently. It’s also important to stay in charge of your faculties so that you can change your bag if required.
Like many, you may have a trip planned for over Christmas, whether it’s abroad or to see family. If that’s the case then it’s best to do a little bit of pre-trip preparation. Make sure you have plenty of supplies to see you through the trip and even a bit extra just to be sure! Do some research beforehand on the facilities in the area you’re visiting and have a plan for care should you need medical assistance whilst away. If you’re going abroad it’s a good idea to have a translated certificate outlining your condition should you require medical help in a foreign country.
Champagne, beer and carbonated soft drinks can all cause your stoma to balloon and cause some discomfort. To avoid this it’s best to avoid them or only drink in moderation. Another tip you could use is to let the drink stand for 10-15 minutes and stir to allow some of the gas to escape before consuming, this should help to reduce any effects.
